Biography

Zohreh Shahbazy is an award-winning and published percussionist, vocalist, harmonist, composer, conductor, multi-instrumentalist and, educator based in Iran and Toronto. Zohreh has performed orchestral works for thousand of audiences including at Meridian Art center, Richmond Hill Center for the Art, Small World Music Center, Aga Khan museum, Rumi Canada, and many festivals and events all over Canada and Iran. Her upcoming album named “Lasting Love” is award-winning by the Canada Council of Art. Her music has known as “Sufi Music” based on “Daf” which is a traditional percussion instrument and Kamanche” which is a bowed string instrument.
Zohreh is one of the most popular Iranian Daf players who has born in Tehran-Iran, Then moved to Canada. She started to learn the Daf alongside masters Siamak Azizzade, Bijan Kamkar & Masoud Habibi. Zohreh started learning Kamanche With Morteza Fathi in 2008 and in the course of 2 years attended classes by master Ardeshir Kamkar, and finished Radifs with Hamidreza Khalatbari. She created a Dafbanoo Band in Canada and performed many times beside her collaboration with other artists all over Toronto.

Daf, The Persian Instrument (Habibi Elite)

Daf is an ancient instrument that originated in the Middle East and has many different names and variations in many countries. It is most popular in Iran and Greece, where it was first played. It can also be found in ancient Persian and Kurdish rituals, and the popular and classical music of many countries. Dayereh (Dayareh) is a frame drum occupying an important place in Iran traditional and classical Persian music, and popular styles of Azeri music. Dayereh is similar to a daf, it can be with or without the attached metal rings. Dayereh is also known as Middle-Eastern tambourine, it is also referred to as ghaval, gaval, qaval, dayere, daira, doira, and doyra. This beautiful Azeri Dayereh comes with a high-quality synthetic head that has a sharp high tune of sound. The outer frame is wooden and comes with some silver rings.
